Martijn van de Hel, Adriaan Craita and Saskia Stolk successfully assisted Eneco Heat Production & Industrials B.V. (Eneco) and Mainport Holding Rotterdam N.V. (Port of Rotterdam Authority) in obtaining approval from the European Commission for a joint venture. The joint venture concerns Rotterdam Shore Power B.V.
Eneco supplies gas and electricity to customers in the Netherlands. Eneco is part of Eneco Group, an energy company that operates in various countries in the European Union, producing sustainable energy from renewable sources such as wind, sun, water and biomass and supplying electricity and gas to large and small customers.
Mainport Holding Rotterdam N.V. (MHR) is a subsidiary of Havenbedrijf Rotterdam N.V. (HBR). HBR is the manager, operator and developer of the port area of Rotterdam and also the port authority.
Eneco and Port of Rotterdam Authority have jointly established Rotterdam Shore Power (RSP). RSP offers sustainable shore power to companies operating in port areas, mainly shipping companies and ships, but also other parties such as container terminal operators. In the current situation, ships generally use (diesel) generators for their power supply. This not only leads to local noise pollution and air pollution, but also to greenhouse gas emissions. To prevent this, RPS offers electric shore power to ships. Shore power is a crucial pillar in the sustainability strategy for the port of Rotterdam. Rotterdam Shore Power was initially established for a single project, but will further expand its services.
The joint venture was notified to the European Commission on 16 October 2025 and was approved by the European Commission on 10 November 2025.
