Maverick Advocaten on BNR about the European Commission's fines for Apple and Meta

Cyriel Ruers was featured on BNR Nieuwsradio – Zakendoen – to explain the fines imposed by the European Commission on Apple and Meta. The two American tech companies have violated the Digital Markets Act (“DMA”). This European regulation includes strict rules for a select number of online platforms that are almost impossible for businesses and consumers to avoid. Apple will receive the highest fine from the Commission, namely €500 million. Meta was fined €200 million.

Regarding the amount of the Apple fine, Cyriel noted the following:

“It (the fine) could certainly be higher. There is also a penalty payment, which means that if Apple does not do what the Commission wants, namely change the (anti-steering) rules, it could be fined up to 5% of its daily global turnover.”

This is the first time the EU has imposed fines for violating the Digital Markets Act. Cyriel commented on this:

"I think there will definitely be more to come, in the sense that there are several investigations underway into non-compliance with the Digital Markets Act. And what I also find interesting is that if the Commission now decides that there has been a violation, this could also lead to claims from app developers who say they have been disadvantaged as a result. So I think that's a new dimension."
