Boutique law firm for competition law and regulation opens its doors

Amsterdam, 2 september 2013

Today Maverick Advocaten N.V. (‘Maverick’) opens its doors on Amsterdam’s Zuidas. Maverick is the first boutique law firm in the Netherlands to focus exclusively on advising and representing clients in matters concerning competition law, economic regulation and consumer rights. The lawyers at Maverick assist clients in all questions concerning the powers of the Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM), the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) and the European Commission.

Maverick was founded by Bas Braeken, Diederik Schrijvershof and Martijn van de Hel, all-round specialists in competition law with almost 40 years of cumulative experience gained in top law firms in the Netherlands. Bas Braeken, who is amongst others specialised in economic regulation, used to work at Stibbe and Allen & Overy. Diederik Schrijvershof, who used to work at Van Doorne and De Brauw, has extensive experience in the healthcare sector. Until recently Martijn van de Hel was a partner at Boekel De Nerée and was voted the best young competition lawyer in the Netherlands in 2007.

The term ‘Maverick’ comes from competition law and describes a player that is not necessarily large but is still a force to be reckoned with in the market because of its unique position. This is how Maverick envisages its own role as competition law specialists in the legal services market.

“At our very first preliminary discussions we quickly agreed that the legal profession is changing fast, particularly in relation to competition law and regulation,” says Bas Braeken, co-founder of Maverick. Diederik Schrijvershof adds: “On the one hand there is a growing need for high-quality support but at lower rates than those charged by the majority of firms. On the other hand, since the ACM was formed through the amalgamation of the Netherlands Competition Authority, the Independent Post and Telecommunications Authority and the Netherlands Consumer Authority, many changes have been taking place in the nature of regulation.” Martijn van de Hel: “To support clients successfully it is essential for lawyers with complementary skills and expertise to pool their strengths. Our lawyers are all experienced in competition law but have different specialisations and backgrounds. We complement one another perfectly and can make a difference for our clients.”
